UNSW VICE-CHANCELLOR'S POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The University offers a number of Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships to attract outstanding post-doctoral scholars to conduct full time research at the University in any of its disciplines. The Fellowships aim to advance the research activities of the University by bringing to, or retaining in Australia, promising scholars. The Fellowships will be available from January 2009 for a period of three years and must be commenced within six months of an offer being made.

Fellowships are offered on the basis of merit to ARC and NH&MRC applicants that narrowly missed out on funding in the 2008 funding rounds. They target early career researchers with a strong track record relative to opportunity, and salaries range from Level A/6 to Level B/6 ($67,140 to $88,902 per annum plus superannuation @ 17%). These salary rates include a superable UNSW academic loading of $3,000 per annum payable to all academic staff (pro rata for fractional academic staff).

How are the 2009 Fellowships being awarded?

The Fellowships will be automatically awarded to those early career researchers that have applied for Fellowship support in 2008 through UNSW, for funding commencing in 2009 through the ARC/NHMRC and who have narrowly missed out on funding.  Each year the ARC and NHMRC provide universities with a list of these, shortly after the funding round has been announced. In 2008 we expect to receive this advice in mid-October.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) in conjunction with the Deans and/or Associate Deans (Research), will make the awards based on this "near miss" list.  There is no application process for these Fellowships, and to be awarded a VC's Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2009, you will have applied for an ARC/NHMRC fellowship, and have narrowly missed out on being awarded one.

Who should I talk to about the 2009 Fellowships?
