Group of Eight DAAD Academic Exchange Program The Group of Eight Australia - Germany Joint Research Cooperation Initiative is a joint initiative of the GO8 universities and the German Adademic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Support provided
The Scheme supports exchanges for GO8 researchers to spend time at partner institutions in Germany and for collaborating German researchers to spend time at GO8 Universities.
How to access support
UNSW researchers wishing to access support must first identify and recruit a researcher or research team working within a German University or Facchochschulen and identify an existing project or develop a new project on which the two research teams can collaborate. You will then be ready to complete the DAAD Application Pack.
The Application Pack is not onerous, requiring only a high level project description, though detailed resumes of up to 5 pages will be required of all researchers.
Selection Criteria
You should take the following selection criteria into account when putting together your research proposal:
- the quality of the project
- the experience and track record of the researchers/research groups
- the level of involvement of early career researchers (high levels of involvement of ECR researchers will be favoured)
- the potential for outcomes of mutual benefit to Australia and Germany.
The Selection Process
Applications from UNSW researchers will first by ranked by a UNSW selection panel against the above criteria. The ranked list and applications are then forwarded to the GO8 Secretariat in Canberra, whose role is to refer all applications to DAAD's German selection Panel. The DAAD selectors take into account the quality of the Australian research teams when deciding which of the German collaborators will receive their support. DAAD's decisions are then referred to the GO8 for endorsement and subsequent funding.
Success rates
Last year 27 applications from Germany and Australia were funded under the Scheme, and two of 10 UNSW research teams were successful in gaining funding.
Deadlines for submission
Reporting requirements
Successful applicants will need to report on their project by 28 February 2011. If the project timeframe exceeds this date, then a progress report will be submitted, with a final report to be provided 2 months after the eventual project completion date. If it is completed prior, then a final report will be due.
