Terms of Reference

The Committee will:

1. examine written proposals concerning animal research and shall:

- approve;

- approve subject to modification; or

- reject such proposals, provided that approval shall only be given to research for which the use of animals is essential and which complies with the requirements of the NSW Animal Research Act (1985) and the Animal Research Regulation (1995), taking into consideration ethical and welfare aspects as well as scientific or educational value.

Submission and consideration of written proposals shall be in accordance with procedures adopted by the Committee and the University;

2. withdraw approval for any project which no longer complies with the Act, in accordance with procedures adopted by the Committee and the University;

3. maintain a register of all approved proposals;

4. monitor the acquisition, transport, production, housing and care of animals;

5. monitor the use and disposal of animals;

6. authorise the treatment or humane killing of any animal;

7. examine and comment on all University plans and policies which may affect animal welfare (or on the plans and policies of any other institution, body or holder of an animal research licence for which the Committee has responsibility);

8. provide and facilitate training for researchers and animal care staff employed at any institutions for which it provides legislative purview;

9. recommend to the institution any measures needed to ensure that the standards of the legislation are maintained;

10. fulfil all agreed obligations, through the establishment of memoranda of understanding, to any other accredited institution for which it is providing ACEC purview; and

11. perform all other duties imposed on the University by the legislation.
