The following research grants and fellowships are available to staff and post-doctoral researchers of UNSW. Funding for research grants and fellowships is a competitive process and applications will be assessed against the stated criteria and considered on competitive merit against other applications. NHMRC has advised that the process of submitting Final Reports has changed for research support and people support grants - this change does not include Scholarships. These changes will take effect immediately and there will be further changes made in the future to make final reporting easier for all concerned.

1.  Department of Defense
Advanced Technology/Therapeutic Development Award LOI
The sponsor anticipates allocating approximately US$92 million to the DoD Deployment Related Medical Research Program to provide support for deployment health-related research of clear scientific merit. Topic areas addressed by this program are: Blood safety and products, Final development of medical devices for use in-theatre, Injury prevention, Traumatic brain injury and psychological health including PTSD, Trauma treatment and rehabilitation, Wound infection and healing, Wound infection vaccines.

2.  Association of Commonwealth Universities
British Academy /ACU grants for International Collaboration
The sponsor supports international activities, involving British scholars in collaboration with Commonwealth partners, in projects involving genuine collaborative work between a defined group of scholars in one, or possibly two, other Commonwealth countries. Priority will be given to applications involving the initiation of a new program where there is an expectation of continued collaboration, or a defined outcome such as planned joint publications. The grant is up to £5000, and intended to cover travel, maintenance costs and approved research expenditure incurred in the partner country or countries.

3.  Ian Potter Foundation
Grants Program
The sponsors provide grants to organisations for public charitable purposes in Australia in the areas of: Arts, Education, Community Wellbeing. There is no maximum amount for the Foundation's grants. The amount requested should match the scope of the project or program you want to undertake, and the size and capacity of your organisation. Applicants should be aware that the Foundation focuses on major new developments within such institutions. The Foundation does not support expenditure on projects or items of equipment that might be funded internally or by a Government agency such as the NHMRC or the ARC.

4.   *Prime Minister and Cabinet
Research Funding for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Health Sector Projects
Australian Government co-funding is available for research projects which will help the nation prepare, prevent, respond to, or recover from chemical, biological or radiological (CBR) threats. Grants are available for up to 50% of the cost of supported projects, with the remainder of cost to be met by the research organisation, interested government user agencies and/or other sponsors.

5.   Canadian High Commission
(i) Faculty Enrichment Program
The sponsor is offering academics in higher education institutions the opportunity to develop and teach courses about Canada, including comparative courses where not less than 50% of the teaching time is spent on the Canadian portion. The maximum amount is C$5,800. It assists with international airfares, domestic travel and living expenses for up to four weeks.
(ii) Faculty Research Program
The sponsor is offering individual academics in universities and research institutes the opportunity to undertake short-term research about Canada or aspects of Canada's bilateral relations with Australia and New Zealand, including interdisciplinary and comparative studies. The maximum value of this award is C$5,800. It assists with international airfares, domestic travel and living expenses for up to four weeks.

6.   *Australian Research Council
Linkage Projects
Linkage Projects supports research and development projects which are collaborative between higher education researchers and other parts of the national innovation system, which are undertaken to acquire new knowledge, and which involve risk or innovation. Proposals for funding under Linkage Projects must involve a collaborating organisation from outside the higher education sector. The collaborating organisation must make a significant contribution (equal to, or greater than, the ARC funding), in cash and/or in kind, to the project.

7.   *Grape Wine and Research Developement Corporation
Regional Development Initiative
The sponsor aims to further R&D which is deemed to be essential to improving the efficiency and quality of wine grape and wine production in a particular region. Funding of up to $50,000 per project per annum for up to three years is available.

8.   Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy
Bicentennial Gold 88 Endowment
The sponsor provides funding for the advancement of education and research in Earth Sciences for the benefit of Economic Geology in Australia. In the year 2009, a total of $10,000 will be available for distribution in one or several of the following: Scholarships for study and/or research, technical visits, travel to conferences, Environmental Geoscience as applied to the Exploration/Mining Industry.

9.   Australian Academy of Science
Award for Research on the Conservation of Endangered Australian Vertebrate Species
The sponsor offers support for research on endangered Australian vertebrate species (endangered either locally or nationally) with the objective of understanding the causes of their decline and with a view to instituting, or improving, the management of the conditions necessary for the species’ recovery. A total of $20,000 is available for allocation to one or more than one grant.

10.   Australian Society for Microbiology
ASM Research Trust Fellowship
The sponsor provides a fellowship to promote excellence in microbiology through support to younger microbiologists for specified research projects in Australia. The fellowship is in the form of a stipend to the recipient, to support a short period (3 to 6 months) of full-time work on a research project. The applicant must be a member of the Australian Society for Microbiology. This award will be in the amount of up to $7,500.

11.  American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund
New Directions Grant
The emphasis of the New Directions (ND) grants is focused on providing funds for scientists and engineers who have very limited or even no preliminary results for a research project they wish to pursue with the intention of using the PRF-driven preliminary results to seek continuation funding from other agencies. The ND grants are to be used to illustrate proof of concept, that is, feasibility, and, accordingly, are to be viewed as seed money for new research ventures.

12.  *NHMRC Partnership
Creating Effective Collaboration Between Policy and Research
NHMRC Partnerships Projects initiative has been designed to meet the need for a more effective integration of evidence into health policy and service delivery. NHMRC Partnerships represent a major new focus for the NHMRC and this initiative will help create partnerships among policy makers, managers, service providers and researchers, and will provide funding for researchers and partner agencies to work together, define research questions, undertake research, and interpret the findings.

13.  National Breast Cancer Foundation
Early Career Fellowship
The sponsor’s aim of this award is to support the development of early career researchers with outstanding potential for a career in breast cancer research. Researchers with a doctorate degree and/or a professional qualification with at least 3 but no more than 8 years of research or professional experience, and can demonstrate substantial ability and potential as a future breast cancer research leader, are encouraged to apply. The maximum funding available is up to $200,000 per annum over 4 years.

14.  *National Institute of Clinical Studies
Fellowship
The NICS is an institute of the NHMRC, and works to improve health care by getting health and medical research into practice. In offering the NICS Fellowships, NICS has joined with some of Australia’s leading organisations to develop future leaders in health care and support them in improving the uptake of evidence into day-day clinical practice. Total value is up to $140,000 over two years.

15.  Association for International Cancer Research
Project Grants
The sponsor's aim is to support fundamental research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. The emphasis is on basic, as opposed to clinical research. The sponsor will consider proposals in which a mixture of basic and clinical research is proposed. Most grants awarded by the sponsor are between £100,000 and £200,000 over three years.

16.  Australasian Podiatry Council
Research Grants Program
The sponsor provides funding to support and facilitate research into foot and related programs. Grants between $2,000 and $4,000 for first time applicants and $2,000 and $8,000 for experienced researchers will be available.

17.  Australian Respiratory Council
The ARC Harry Windsor Research Grants Scheme
The sponsor is offering several research grants of $50,000 each to support clinical, public health and basic scientific research in: Tuberculosis, Respiratory diseases related to other infections, Smoking related respiratory diseases. Grants are available for projects which were submitted to the NHMRC for consideration in 2008, were considered fundable by the NHMRC, but did not receive funding for 2009.

18.  The Myer Foundation
Arts and Humanities Small Grants Program
The sponsor provides support to fund the arts, and seeks to play a critical role in upholding the integrity of the arts community within Australia by supporting artistic initiatives that often fall outside other funding agendas. Grants are capped at $30,000 and are made for a one-year period only. Only one application can be considered per applicant.

19.  Australia Council for the Arts
(i) Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Publishing Initiatives
The Languages Other Than English (LOTE) publishing initiative supports the translation and publication of works by authors writing in languages other than English. Applicants can apply for up to $15,000 per title for works of fiction and non-fiction, $10,000 per title for play scripts and works of poetry.

(ii) Dance - Art Form Development program
Art form development grants provide organisations with funding for programs of activity that develop the art form. The sponsor must have a minimum of 30 per cent of income per year from sources other than the sponsor. Infrastructure costs will not be supported.

(iii) ATSIA - Red Ochre Award
The sponsor honours an eminent Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artist who has made an outstanding lifelong contribution to the recognition of Indigenous arts in Australia and around the world. One award of $50,000 will be considered annually.
(iv) Music - New Work
The sponsor supports one-off projects that involve the creation or development of music, new musical material or media arts projects. Recipients may apply to the music board for professional fees, associated expenses such as on-costs and travel, and a reasonable level of administrative costs. This includes projects that are not fully professional. If the recipient wishes to claim administrative costs, they should provide a detailed breakdown of these costs in their project budget.
(v) Music - Presentation and Promotion
The sponsor supports activities such as gigs, concerts, promotional or performance tours within Australia, festivals, showcases and publications that document or discuss aspects of music in Australia. The recipient may apply to the music board for professional fees, associated expenses such as on-costs and travel, and a reasonable level of promotional and administrative costs, including those for activities that are not fully professional.
(vi) Theatre - Fellowships
The sponsor is offering two-year fellowship grants to outstanding artists with financial support to produce creative work or undertake professional development that extends their practice and career. The fellowships offer a two year living allowance of A$45,000 per year.
(vii) Theatre - Skills and Arts Development
Skills and arts development grants support activities that provide professional development opportunities to individual theatre workers or that contribute to the overall development of the art form in Australia. The maximum funding available is $7,000.

20.  National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA)
(i) Janet Holmes a Court Artists’ Grant & NAVA Visual Arts & Crafts’ Grants Scheme
The sponsor is offering financial assistance to professional artists for the public presentation of their work. Amounts available are: $500 for individuals and $1,000 for groups. Individuals are eligible for one grant only in a twelve-month period. This grant provides assistance towards the costs of public presentation of visual arts, craft and design..
(ii) Marketing Grant for NSW Artists
Grants of up to $1,375 are available for individuals and up to $2,750 for groups of NSW artists. These funds are to assist directly with the costs associated with the development and implementation of a Marketing Plan. Individuals and groups are eligible for one grant only from this Scheme in any twelve month period. Funds are not available to pay for the services of marketing professionals.

21.  State Library NSW
Blake Dawson Waldron prize for Business Literature
The annual Blake Dawson Prize for Business Literature was established to encourage the highest standards of commentary in the fields of business and finance. As such, the Prize is calculated to enable the general reader to be better informed about Australia’s commercial life and participants in that life. The range of subjects covered by the Prize includes Australian corporate and commercial literature, histories, accounts and analyses of corporate affairs as well as biographies of business men and women. The winner will receive prize money of $30,000.

22.  Australian Academy of Science
Selby Travelling Fellowship
The Selby Fellowship is awarded to distinguished overseas scientists to visit Australia for public lecture/seminar tours and to visit scientific centres in Australia. Fellowships are tenable for visits of between two weeks and three months. Overseas and local air fares (economy) and a daily allowance are provided. Funding of up to $10,000 is offered subject to a detailed itinerary.

23.  Ian Potter  Foundation
Conference and Travel Grants
The sponsor provides small travel grants to assist early career staff members with at lest three years tenure to travel for the purpose of professional development. Conference Grants are also provided to support symposia and conferences of international status to be held within Australia. Generally grants are made to assist with the travel and accommodation costs of an international keynote speaker. The grants made are generally between $2,000 and $3,000.
