The following research grants and fellowships are available to staff and post-doctoral researchers of UNSW. Funding for research grants and fellowships is a competitive process and applications will be assessed against the stated criteria and considered on competitive merit against other applications. NHMRC has advised that the process of submitting Final Reports has changed for research support and people support grants - this change does not include Scholarships. These changes will take effect immediately and there will be further changes made in the future to make final reporting easier for all concerned.

Multidisciplinary and International
 
1.     Human Frontier Science Program
(i) Cross Disciplinary Fellowships
The sponsor provides a fellowship intended for applicants with a Ph.D. degree in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, material sciences or computer sciences who want to train in a biological research environment or work in a team of scientists that investigates a fundamental biological question.Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships provide a living allowance and a research/travel allowance, plus other allowances as requested by the fellow.
(ii) Long Term Fellowships
The sponsor provides Long-Term Fellowships intended for applicants with a Ph.D. degree in the life sciences who are expected to broaden their horizon by moving into a new research area that is different from their doctoral studies or previous postdoctoral training Long-Term Fellowships provide support for a period of three years. No renewal is possible. Long-Term Fellowships provide a living allowance and a research/travel allowance, plus other allowances as requested by the fellow.

2.     Northern Territory Research and Innovation Board
(i) Research Grants
The sponsor aims at promoting partnerships between research institutions, government research groups and third parties and provides funding to enable research groups to leverage additional research funding to the NT, such as through the various Commonwealth Government research funding programs. Previous research grants awarded have been between $5,000 - $25,000 per year for up to three years.
(ii) Innovation Grants
The sponsor aims to support the development of innovative ideas, products, services and approaches by supporting private enterprise, including indigenous enterprise, joint ventures and industry groups to get their ideas off the ground and/or developed further. These grants are aimed to assist projects that would otherwise not be eligible for assistance through programs such as those offered by AusIndustry. In the past, funding has been between $2,000 - $15,000.

3.     World Community Grid
Request for Proposals
The sponsor invites public and not-for-profit organizations to apply to use its powerful grid technology at no cost for projects that benefit humanity. Grid technology enables researchers to access tremendous amounts of power, exceeding that of several supercomputers, to run complex computations and to accelerate the pace of their research. Research results must be made available to the global research community and will be made available on World Community Grid's web site.

4.     Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research
Australian - Indian Strategic Research Fund
 
The sponsor aims to facilitate and support Science and Technology research cooperation between Australia and India. The fund will assist Australian researchers to increase their participation in leading edge scientific research with Indian scientists, to raise the profile of Australian research, and to support the development of strategic alliances between Australian and Indian researchers. There is no prescribed funding limit on individual applications or activities, except for: international travel costs; living allowances; salaries for post doctoral fellowships; and postgraduate stipends.

5.     Mizutani Foundation for Glycosciences
Research Grants
The sponsor provides support for basic studies in the field of glycoconjugates to promote world-wide progress in glycoscience. Applicants must have a doctoral degree or its equivalent, and be a member of a scientific institution where he or she can carry out the proposed project. As much as 7,000,000 yen may be requested for one year. Indirect costs of up to ten percent are allowed.

6.     Ausindustry
Innovation Grants for Climate Ready Projects Round 1
The sponsor is calling for applications for innovation grants for up to 50% of costs, ranging from $50,000 to $5,000,000 and up to three years duration. Applications are encouraged for projects that address the effects of climate change, such as: water recycling, waste recovery or small scale renewable energy technologies; energy reduction; monitoring of emissions or energy use; use of biotech or nanotech to address the effects of climate change on people and the environment; carbon footprint databases; green building materials that make homes energy efficient.

7.     Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering
Research Awards 2009
AINSE provides funds to assist researchers from member universities to gain access to ANSTO and other AINSE facilities. Awards are awarded for one year commencing in January. Areas of particular interest include: Researching climate change; Management of water resources; Study of air pollution; Studying the structural integrity of materials; Radiobiological research; Medical physics and imaging; Materials science.

8.     Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Research Grants (Seed Funding)
The sponsor encourages the development of new information that contributes to the understanding of the basic etiology and pathogenesis of CF. In addition, consideration will be given to those projects that provide insight into the development of information that may contribute to the development of new therapies for CF. All proposals must be hypothesis driven, and sufficient preliminary data must be provided to justify CFF support. Funding is US$90,000 per year (plus 8% indirects) for a period of two years, at which time a grant may be competitively renewed for an additional year of funding.

9.     Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research
(i) ISH Visiting Postdoctoral Award
The sponsor encourages experienced researchers from countries other than Australia to work in Australia for up to two years on a specific research project in hypertension or a related field in basic, clinical or public health areas. The ISH Visiting Postdoctoral Award will be awarded to an Australian research institution, as a contribution towards the salary of a postdoctoral researcher who is not an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
(ii) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
The sponsor provides funding for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship for a research project in hypertension or related fields in basic, clinical or public health areas at an Australian institution. Applicants must have had not less than five years and nor more than ten years post-PhD research experience. The research project will be in hypertension or a related field in basic, clinical or public health areas. In 2009 the amount paid to the employing institution will be $105,000. This amount is based on a salary of around $70,000 per annum, 34.5% on-costs and a further $10,000 for research support.

10.     Cancer Research Institute
Irvington Institute Fellowship Program
The sponsor supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in cancer immunology or general immunology. Funding will be up to US$40,000 for the first year, US$42,000 for the second year and US$44,000 for the third year. In addition, an allowance of US$1,500 per year is allotted to the host institution for use at sponsor’s discretion to help pay for the fellow’s research supplies, travel to scientific meetings or health insurance.

11.   Multiple Sclerosis Australia
Incubator Grant
The sponsor wishes to promote research into rehabilitative and other aspects of multiple sclerosis by assisting researchers with a grant, of up to $25,000 plus GST for one year only, to fund the earliest stages of a new research effort in order to validate a process or provide preliminary data. Relevance to MS needs to be stressed and all applications should be of a high standard.

12. The Library Council of NSW
(i) The Nancy Keesing Fellowship
The sponsor aims to promote the State Library of NSW as a centre of research into Australian life and culture. This may be in the form of bibliographical or collection analysis, or historical or creative nonfiction. Funding is $10,000 for 12 months to supplement income or to meet research and travel costs within the criteria of the Fellowship. The Fellowship holder is expected to make at least one public presentation and at least one staff seminar at the State Library.
(ii) The C. H. Currey Memorial Fellowship
The C.H Currey Fellowship aims to promote the writing of Australian history from original sources of information, preferably making use of the resources of the State Library of NSW. The amount of the Fellowship to be awarded will be $20,000. The money may be used to supplement a writer's income during work on his/her project or to meet the necessary research and travel costs, within the aim of the Fellowship.

13. Perpetual Trustees
Alice Bale Art Award
The sponsor awards a $40,000 travelling scholarship to applicants of Australian or British nationality, and $2,000 art prizes in oil and/or acrylics and for works on paper. Entries submitted by each applicant must be in the field of traditional realism and figurative art. It is expected the program would be completed within 2 years.  The value of the travelling Scholarship is $40,000. The Art Prizes are valued at $2,000 each in oil and/or acrylic and works on paper.

14. Australian Academy of Science
(i) Boden Research Conferences
The sponsor conducts a series of small specialist conferences in the biological sciences to enable active research workers in rapidly advancing fields to discuss current advances and problems. Societies and organisations are invited to submit a one page expression of intent to hold a conference. A sum of up to $10,000 is offered.
(ii) Elizabeth & Frederick White Research Conferences
The sponsor conducts a series of conferences in the physical and mathematical sciences of about two days' duration with a membership of twenty to thirty.  A sum of up to $10,000 is allocated. The supplementation of this sum is encouraged. Societies and organisations are invited to submit a one page expression of intent to hold a conference and are asked to make an undertaking on acceptance of an offer of funding from the Academy to call their conference an "Elizabeth and Frederick White Conference" and to advertise it as such.
(iii) Fenner Conferences on the Environment
The sponsor will provide funding of up to $8,000 for the hosting of a conference on the environment and conservation issues in Australia and its environs. One conference will be funded annually. The Academy's Shine Dome is available free of charge. There is a preference for holding the conferences in the Dome unless the location proves unsuitable.

15. National Library of Australia
Japan Study Grants
The sponsor is offering Japan Study Grants to postgraduates, honours students, academic staff or independent researchers in Australia who wish to use the Japan-related collections of the National Library for their research. Grant holders will receive an honorarium of $850 per week to cover accommodation and living costs in Canberra, together with a return economy class air fare for travel between the grant holder's home within Australia to Canberra.

The sponsor is offering travel grants of up to $2,000 to allied health professionals for the purpose of presenting their research relevant to Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes.
