Funding for research grants and fellowships is a competitive process and applications will be assessed against the stated criteria and considered on competitive merit against other applications. Multidisciplinary and International
 
1.     Go8 Australia-Germany Joint Research Co-Ooperation Scheme.
General Call for Research Collaborations

The scheme is a joint initiative of the Group of Eight (Go8) universities and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funding of $1.5 million initially for three years from 2009-2011 inclusive. The scheme aims to foster research collaborations of the highest quality between Australian researchers from Go8 universities and German researchers. Exchange participants must either be employed as academic staff members in a teaching and research or research only role at a Go8 university, or a PhD student involved in the research project submitted by an eligible staff member. The scheme will support exchanges for Australian researchers to spend time at partner institutions in Germany and for collaborating German researchers to spend time at Go8 universities.
Internal Deadline: Applications will open on the 15th April 2009 and the deadline for compliance checking is Monday 15 June 2009. Details of the scheme and how to apply are pending release from the Go8 and are now on the GMO website.
 
 
2.     Australia Korea Foundation

The Foundation promotes people-to-people and institutional links covering the spectrum of Australia's relations with Korea . This includes education, science and technology, commerce and industry, arts, the media and sport. It administers and funds projects and programs which will assist in achieving its purposes and aims.

3.     World Anti Doping Agency (WADA)
2009 Scientific research Grants

The World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) Health, Medical and Research Committee (HMRC) have identified relevant areas of research in the field of anti-doping, in particular those related to the List of Prohibited Substances and Methods. WADA promotes and funds, on a yearly basis, scientific projects in the anti-doping field covering the development or optimization of analytical tools for the detection and/or quantification of doping substances or methods as well as the pharmacology and physiological effects of specific substances/methods or group of substances on athletic performance. In this context, WADA gives priority to projects with direct and imminent applicability in the fight against doping in sport over basic research projects.

4.     The Ramaciotti Foundation
Research Grant - Expressions of Interest   
i) The Ramaciotti Foundation will be making a $1 million grant in November 2009 for a single major initiative in biomedical research in NSW.
The trustee of the Foundation, Perpetual is calling for expressions of interest from groups or individuals undertaking biomedical research within universities, public hospitals, medical research institutes and similar institutes in New South Wales . If you are interested in applying a one page outline of your proposal is required.

ii) Establishment Grants
These start up grants are intended to provide short term research support for a young investigator who is taking or has taken a new position in another institution (as opposed to a promotion with their current organisation). The applicant must have a maximum of five years cumulative post-doctoral experience as at 1 January 2010. The Grant can be used for any combination of personnel, equipment (excluding infrastructure), consumables or other expenses, but not for travel. The maximum total amount is $50,000.

iii) Equipment Grants
Applications may be made for a contribution for or towards the acquisition of a major item of equipment. Equipment may be used on various projects by a number of investigators within a department or institution. A commitment from the Foundation to contribute will be subject to the balance of the full cost being raised by the applicant, including the matching grant from the host institution.

5.     Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre
*Request for Proposals: Tourism Investment in Australia - A Scoping Study

The aim of this project is to develop an understanding of the tourism investment environment for Australia and a comparison between the investment environments for tourism compared with other industries.

6.     Brain Foundation
*Research Grants 
The sponsor invites applications for the 2009 Brain Foundation Research Grants to support research projects in the neurosciences. The primary objective of the Research Grants is to support individual researchers and research teams to conduct the highest quality research in brain illnesses and neurological disorders as well as brain and spinal injuries. A subsidiary objective is to provide opportunities for early career researchers to gain initiating funding for projects with potential.

8.     The Ian Potter Foundation   
Project Grants
The Ian Potter Foundation is one of Australia's leading private philanthropic organisations. The Foundation has a track record of funding projects led by far sighted individuals and organisations that improve the Australian community's ability to respond creatively to social, environmental, science and health issues, and that develop our capacity as a nation through the arts and education.

9.     Department of Environment and Climate Change (NSW)
Environmental Trust - Environmental Research program
The sponsor is offering grants of up to $200,000 for projects that help address environmental problems in New South Wales. The Environmental Research Program supports research projects by community groups, universities and research institutions in NSW. The objectives of the Environmental Trust are to: generate new knowledge or information to facilitate local solutions to environmental problems; discover new methods of operation for NSW industries; provide knowledge about general environmental problems; and assess environmental degradation.
Internal Deadline: Only 3 EOI from UNSW can be put forward to the Trust in any round therefore applications must be submitted to GMO by 17th April 2009 for shortlisting.
 
 
10. Australian Institue for Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE)
Postdoctoral Fellowships
Applications are now sought form the 2009 Postdoctoral Fellowship program. The areas in which applications are encouraged are: neutron scattering, radiopharmaceuticals, high-resolution climate records using nuclear techniques and materials engineering.

11. Association for International Cancer Research (AICR)

The Association for International Cancer Research finances fundamental scientific research into the causes of cancer. The associations primary objectives are: To promote, conduct and support research into the causes, prevention, treatment and cure of cancer and associated conditions, and to promote publication of the useful results of such research, and to promote, conduct and support research and surveys in cancer, its possible causes and its effects (physical, social or otherwise), and to promote publication of useful results of such research.

12. Alcohol and Health 
Research Grants Scheme

The Alcohol and Health Medical Research Grants Scheme is funded by Lion Nathan Limited, with the aim of providing financial support for independent research into the potential effects of alcohol consumption. Applications for grants are open to eligible early career researchers. Funding of up to $35,000 is available.

13. *Anz Charitable Trusts  - The Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation
i) Senior Medical Research Fellowship
The sponsor invites applications annually for a five-year Senior Medical Research Fellowship valued at $195,000 per annum. Outstanding researchers who are medically qualified or graduates of another scientific discipline, with recognised postdoctoral achievements seeking to establish a research career in Australia and undertake research in an Australian academic institution, are eligible to apply whether they are currently working in Australia or not. Only Australian nationals or permanent residents are eligible for the award.

ii) Clinical Investigatorship
Applications are invited for “Clinical Investigator” awards of $60,000, given on a once only basis. The Foundation hopes to offer five (5) awards in this category. Eligible applicants will be medical graduates or graduates of other clinical disciplines who have completed both their clinical and research training which will normally be at doctoral level and are commencing their first definitive clinical position, or have been in such a post for no more than 24 months on 1 May 2009.

14. National Breast Cancer Foundation
i)NBCF Early Career Fellowship

The aim of this award is to support the development of early career researchers with outstanding potential for a career in breast cancer research. Researchers with a doctorate degree and/or a professional qualification from an accredited institution who have between three and eight years of research or professional experience are encouraged to apply. Funding of up to $600,000 over 4 years is available. Application forms are currently under review and will be available on the website soon.

ii) Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant
The NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant funding is for a maximum of two years. This grant is limited in scale, with a maximum value of $200,000 per grant for direct costs over one or two years and is non-renewable.

iii) National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Program
NBCF believes in the need to be responsive to breast cancer research progress and opportunities nationally and internationally and maximise the use of limited resources. The National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer.

2009 Fellowships and Scholarships
The sponsor is offering a range of fellowships and Scholarships across a range of art forms to individual artists, designers and writers living in NSW to assist with their professional development. Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship $60K, NSW Women and Arts fellowship $30K, Rex Cramphorn Theatre Scholarship $30K, Design NSW Travelling Art Scholarship $18K, NSW Writer's Fellowship $20K.

16. The Spencer Foundation
Research Grants
As part of a new institutional initiative, the Spencer Foundation will make several awards of up to US$40,000 for research projects in Philosophy as it relates to educational policy and practice. The sponsor has identified the following areas of inquiry: The Relation between Education and Social Opportunity; Organizational Learning in Schools, School Systems, and Higher Education Institutions; Teaching, Learning, and Instructional Resources and  Purposes and Values of Education.

17. Georges Mora Foundation
Fellowship 2009 - 2010
The aim of the Fellowship is to provide funds and access to resources for an artist to explore new thinking and to research new ideas in art.  This Fellowship aims to provide maximum flexibility and autonomy to each chosen Fellow in their use of resources of the State Library of Victoria and elsewhere, and in their presentation of the outcome of their research and interpretation. Also, if the Fellow wishes to apply for a residency at the Cite International in Paris, the Alliance Francaise will provide assistance with the application

The Leakey Foundation was formed to foster research into human origins. Recent priorities include research into the environment, archaeology, and human palaeontology of the Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene; the behaviour, morphology, and ecology of the great apes and other primate species; and the behavioural ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers. Funding of up to $22,000 per grant is available

2009 NSW History Fellowship

The NSW History Fellowship is offered annually by the Government to assist a person living in New South Wales to research and produce a work on a subject of historical interest relating to New South Wales. Applicants are required to demonstrate that their project will add to, or bring fresh perspectives to bear upon, their nominated subject. They should also demonstrate that the project will benefit their experience and development as an historian and/or advance scholarly historical writing in New South Wales Funding of $20,000 is available.

2009 NSW Archival Research Fellowship

The fellowship is awarded annually by the Government to assist a person living in NSW to complete an innovative and quality research project that makes substantial use of the collection of the State Records Authority of NSW. The successful applicant is expected to produce an article or book for publication, or a website, exhibition film or event that is significant to the people of NSW and promotes the Authority. Funding of $15,000 is available.

The aim of the award is to honour a person who has made an outstanding discovery (or discoveries) in clinical or experimental biomedical research that has had an important impact on biomedical science, clinical medicine, or the way in which health care is delivered. This prestigious award consists of a medal and a monetary prize of $50,000

23. The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research
The Prime Minister's Awards for Science
The Australian Government awards prizes annually for outstanding scientific achievements and excellence in science teaching. These awards are the most prestigious and significant of their kind in Australia. Nominations are now invited for these awards, which are offered to Australian citizens or those who hold permanent residence status in Australia. Nominations should be made by nominators who are personally knowledgeable of the nominated achievements and who can offer expert opinions on its worth. Self nominations will not be considered.
