The following research grants and fellowships are available to staff and post-doctoral researchers of UNSW. Funding for research grants and fellowships is a competitive process and applications will be assessed against the stated criteria and considered on competitive merit against other applications. 1. *Sugar Research and Development Corporation
Research Projects Expressions of Interest
The sponsor is calling for Expressions of Interest for Research Projects to commence from July 2009. Priority will be given to projects which will deliver a step change to profitability and a high return to industry on R&D investment, compared to projects targeting incremental gain. Funding will be between $1m - $1.5m available for new projects in 2009-10, although this range is only indicative at this time. The actual amount will be determined in March 2009 based on the size of the 2008 crop, future crop forecasts and other conditions in the industry.

2. Department of State and Regional Development, NSW Government
NSW - Gangwon Technology Collaboration
The sponsor has opened nominations for a new grants program that will connect NSW and South Korea in joint technology projects with funding of up to $100,000 a year to assist joint projects involving researchers from NSW and the South Korean province of Gangwon. Grants will assist research collaborations in areas including medical devices, information and communications technology, advanced materials, nanotechnology and biotechnology. Collaborative research teams must have at least one company or researcher from both NSW and Gangwon.

3. Management Education Research Institute
(i) Grants Program
The sponsor supports faculty research that will influence management education. Grants up to US$100,000 each are funded for one to three-year periods. Data from the extensive large-scale data sets gathered through GMAC® surveys of prospective graduate management students, current students, alumni, and employers are also available for licensing.
(i) Faculty Fellowships
The sponsor supports innovative and thought provoking management education leaders. The institute offers up to four annual year long faculty fellowships with awards up to US$50,000 each for research at the fellows' home institutions.

4. BHP Billiton Community Trust
Corporate Community Grant Program
The sponsor assists organisations which provide a wide range of services and benefits to the Australian community. A small number of national projects from not-for-profit organisations in Australia are selected for support each year. These projects generally fall in the range of $50,000 - $200,000 although a longer term project could receive this amount annually for up to three years.

5. Group of Eight
European Fellowships
The sponsor offers eight fellowships to early career researchers in Europe to further research collaboration between Australia and Europe. Fellowships are offered to citizens of Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungry, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. Funding of $20,000 is available to support travel and living cost to work at a Go8 member university for 3 to 6 months. It is intended that fellows will continue to receive a salary from their employers in their home countries.

6. Tarac Technologies
Environmental Future Fund
The sponsor will allocate up to $20,000 a year to individuals or companies to increase the body of knowledge about environmental solutions for the Australian wine industry. The funding is for a six to eighteen month period and may include: a strategic overseas study tour; a research project; further development of an emerging processing technology; or an IT solution. The funding is valued at up to $20,000 per year. The maximum duration for funding is 18 months.

7. *Grains Research and Development Coporation
(i) Industry In-Service Training (IST)
The sponsor offers support to younger scientists, advisers, technical staff and others engaged in work relevant to the sponsor's objectives that may not be eligible for other forms of support. Support will generally be up to a maximum of $25,000, but can exceed this amount in special circumstances where the sponsor considers these to exist. Funds may be provided for travel, secondment or interchange between institutions. Support will be for a maximum of six months.
(ii) Grains Industry Senior Fellowship
Senior fellowships are awarded to experienced R&D personnel who seek to enhance their experience and their potential to contribute to the work of the Corporation by working at an institution in Australia or overseas. Fellowships will be for a duration of twelve months. Support will generally be up to a maximum of $50,000, but can exceed this amount in special circumstances where the sponsor considers these to exist.
(iii) Industry Visiting Fellowship
Grains Industry Visiting Fellowships (VFs) are available to overseas R&D personnel. Activity should occur at one or more Australian host institutions or companies. Preference will be given to candidates that will be collaborating with other institutions in addition to their host. Support will be for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 12 months. The total value of the award shall not be greater than $17,500 per visitor. Applicants who have supplementary funding from other institutions will be regarded favourably.

8. Stanley Medical Research Institute
Treatment Trials for Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder
The sponsor facilitates the direct testing of new treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Funding is for a maximum of US$300,000 per year for up to three years, depending on the stage of development of the compounds to be tested and the type of trial required.

9. *Australian Rotary Health Research Fund
(i) Evaluation of Mental Health Service Provision
The sponsor invites applications from teams (composed of researchers, service providers and carers/consumers) in clinical or public health fields for studies evaluating the effectiveness of mental health service provision. The total budget for one year of funding MUST NOT exceed $60,000. GST of 10% is to be added to this amount.
(ii) Evaluation of Rural Medical Health Service Provision
The sponsor invites applications from teams (composed of researchers, service providers and carers/consumers) in clinical or public health fields for studies evaluating the effectiveness of rural health service provision. The total budget for one year of funding MUST NOT exceed $40,000. GST of 10% is to be added to this amount.

10. Cancer Institute of NSW
 (i) Career Development and Support Fellowships - Future Research Leaders
The sponsor provides funding to develop and support researchers who can demonstrate substantial ability and potential as future cancer research leaders. Fellowships are valued up to $250,000 per annum, for a total of five years, to commence January 2009. The funding provided will cover the salary of the Fellow ($150,000 pa) as well as an amount up to $100,000 towards the research project.
(ii) Research Equipment Grants
The sponsor is committed to pursuing and supporting excellence and innovation in cancer research as a key method to improve cancer outcomes in NSW. Administering Institution/organisation and the Chief Investigator(s) must jointly make the application. Applications are invited for grants valued between $50,000 and $300,000. Applications from all cancer research disciplines will be considered.
(iii) Research Innovation Grants
The sponsor provides startup funds/proof of concept costs to leverage funding from other agencies (eg: NHMRC, ARC, philanthropic etc) Funding will be up to $50,000 for one year.

11. Rebecca L Cooper Medical Research Foundation
2009 Research Grants
The sponsor provides research grants in the fields of Brain Sciences, diabetes, geriatrics, lung diseases (excluding cancer), rheumatology, vision sciences and in the medical application of genetic research. The value of each grant will be between $8,000 and $20,000; (these limits must be strictly adhered to) and is preferably, but not exclusively, for specific equipment.

12. The Cancer Council NSW
Research Innovator Grants in Pancreatic Cancer
The sponsor has developed a new granting scheme, known as Innovator Grants, to promote the development and sharing of innovative cancer research ideas, which address agreed goals in pancreatic cancer. Funding of up to $100,000 for one year is available for innovative and original research projects of high quality and potential.

13. *NHMRC Partnership
Creating Effective Collaboration Between Policy and Research
NHMRC Partnerships Projects initiative has been designed to meet the need for a more effective integration of evidence into health policy and service delivery. NHMRC Partnerships represent a major new focus for the NHMRC and this initiative will help create partnerships among policy makers, managers, service providers and researchers, and will provide funding for researchers and partner agencies to work together, define research questions, undertake research, and interpret the findings.

14. The Australian Prime Ministers Centre
Fellowship Program
The sponsor is seeking applications from established researchers who wish to work on a research project about Australia's prime ministers, their lives, achievements and governments. Applicants should have scholarly credentials (preferably Masters or PhD) or a record of equivalent achievement. Funding of up to $16,000 to cover travel to Canberra, living subsidy and research expenses will be provided.

15. Australia Council for the Arts
Dance - New Work
The sponsor aims to encourage artists to take the time to develop a work over the course of its life cycle, and can be used for one or more development stages of the one work. Applications will be assessed according to the following: Artistic innovation with a creative rationale; Artistic or professional skills appropriate to the activity; The benefit of the activity; Audience development potential; Good planning and effective use of resources; Contribution to the cultural diversity of Australian dance (elective criterion).

16. *Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation
Preliminary Research Proposals
The sponsor invests in the knowledge needs of three portfolio areas: New rural industries, Specific established industries and Cross-sectoral national rural issues. RIRDC investments are driven by the Five - Year R&D plan, which addresses the needs of each industry and ensures the priorities are industry and government driven. Salaries, salary related on-cost, expenditure on capital and expendable items and travel cost may be supported.

17. Law & Justice Foundation of NSW
General Grants Program
The sponsor's objective is to contribute to the development of a fair and equitable justice system which addresses the legal needs of the community and to improve access to justice by the community (in particular, by economically and socially disadvantaged people). General grants are financial grants over $5,000 and are allocated by the Foundation's Board of Governors.

18. Trust
The Thelma Afford Theatre, Stage, TV or Film Costume Design Award
This award is open to Australian residents between the ages of 17 and 30 to further their studies in theatre, TV or Film costume design in the various visual dramatic media in Australia or elsewhere or to enable an art student to study the visual artists and the history of period clothes at any art school or University that has a suitable course. The award is valued at $7,500. There is a $20 administration fee for each entry.

19. Glaxosmithkline
Award for Research Excellence
This award is to recognise a researcher with a demonstrated track record of significant work in human health, and for whom the award will facilitate career development and further achievements with potential importance to human health and Australian research. The recipient will come from the field of Human Health. In addition to the GSK Research Excellence Trophy, $60,000 is awarded to further the scientist’s work and knowledge.

20. Australian Psychological Society
(i) Pearson Education & APS Early Career Teaching Award
The sponsor recognises excellence in teaching psychology in Australian Universities by academics in the early stages of their career. This Award is designed to encourage developing teachers who show potential for excellence. Applications are invited from individuals who have held an academic position for no longer than a total of 5 years and whose teaching is at any level within the higher education system. The total value of the award is $3,000.
(ii) Distinguished Contribution to Education Award
The sponsor provides funding to recognize distinguished contributions to psychology education in Australia. The successful candidate will be invited to attend The Australian Psychological Society Limited Annual Conference as an invited speaker on any topic related to the teaching of psychology If he/she attends, the travel, conference registration expenses and accommodation for up to four nights at the conference venue paid by the Society. The awardee will also receive a plaque and twelve months membership in the Society.
(iii) Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award
The sponsor provides an award to recognise distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to psychology by psychologists at mid or later career stage. The successful candidate will be expected to attend The Australian Psychological Society Limited Annual Conference as a keynote speaker, and submit a version of the address to the Australian Journal of Psychology. Travel, conference registration expenses and accommodation for up to four nights at the conference venue will be paid by the Society. In addition, awardees will receive a plaque and twelve months membership to the sponsor organization.
(iv) Early Career Research Award
The sponsor provides awards to recognise excellence in scientific achievement in psychology among psychologists who are at early stages of their research careers by awarding Early Career Research Awards. Individuals who receive an Early Career Research Award will be invited to attend the Annual Conference of The Australian Psychological Society Limited in the year following the Award, to present a paper on their work. Individuals accepting the invitation to attend and present a paper at the Annual Conference will have their travel, conference registration expenses and accommodation for up to four nights at the conference venue paid by the Society. If he/she attends, a plaque of the Award will be presented at their paper presentation.

21. *Sugar Research and Development Corporation
Travel and Learning Opportunity Projects (TLOPs)
The sponsor calls for applications for TLOPs for activities such as mentoring, conducting workshops and seminars, support of invited speakers or facilitators for industry functions, attendance at conferences, study tours, or any other activity intended to build capacity for learning, change or innovation in sugar industry people. Maximum SRDC funding is $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for groups. Activities planned as part of these proposals should be undertaken in calendar year 2009.

22. Australian - American Fulbright Commission
US Fulbright Senior Specialist Award
The sponsor supports Australian educational institutions to bring U.S. Senior Specialists to Australia for two to six week periods. The scholarship must be taken between 1 January and 31 December. Scholars are required to spend a minimum of two weeks up to a maximum of six weeks at the institution and will receive: economy class international air travel; and a stipend of US$200 per day for a maximum of six weeks; In addition, Australian host institutions are expected to pay for accommodation, meals and in-country travel.
