The sponsor is calling for submissions of applications for the 2008 Development Research Awards valued at $50,000 to $250,000 per year up to 3 years. It aims to attract high quality research that informs policy development and increase the general stock of knowledge around development issues. Applications must nominate one of the following research priority themes: Development effectiveness, Disability, Economics, Education, Environment, Food Security, Gender, Governance and State Building and Health.
(ii) 2009 Pacific Economic Postdoctoral Fellowships

The sponsor is calling for submissions of applications from postdoctoral candidates (early career researchers within 5 years of completing a PhD) from Australian universities. Research must address economic issues affecting Pacific island countries. The Fellowship is valued at $110,000 to cover salary and other cost for a project to be completed within 12 months of commencement, for research to begin in 2009.

The Fellowship is awarded on an annual basis to allow an Australian forest or forest products scientist to undertake or participate in research and development, in a country outside Australia, which has the potential to benefit the Australian forest and wood products industry. The Fellowship will be for between 3 and 12 months at an international research facility.

3. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International

(i) Scholar Awards - Letter of Intent

The sponsor will fund investigators who are willing to take risks and attempt new approaches to accelerate type 1 diabetes research. The Scholar Award is meant to support investigators who intend to pursue new research directions that are not funded from other sources. Funding is up to US$250,000 per year for up to five years.
(ii) Program Project Grants - Letter of Intent

JDRF Program Projects provide a mechanism to stimulate new collaborations between clinical and basic scientists and/or between scientists from diverse backgrounds as a means to conceive and develop new approaches to persistent obstacles to progress along the various paths to a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications. Up to US$660,000 per year, for up to three years, may be requested. This grant scheme places a limit on the amount of funding that can be sought to cover the University's indirect cost recovery for overheads.
(iii) Clinical Investigation Research Grants - Letter of Intent

The sponsor intends to support early-stage clinical trials to test novel therapeutic approaches as well as non-interventional patient oriented studies that are intended to lead to the development of clinical interventions and monitoring tools for diabetes and its complications. Applications must be goal oriented and closely focused on the JDRF mission. Funding will be for a maximum of US$660,000 total costs per year for a period of up to 5 years. Indirect costs cannot exceed 10 percent of direct costs and institutional support is encouraged but not required.

4. Cancer & Bowel Research Trust

The Cancer & Bowel Research Trust does not fund programs of research. Grant assistance for up to 3 years is intended to support work for which the applicants already have some or will have some support within their respective institutions. Funding will not be greater than 75% of the total cost of the research project, provided that such amount is not greater than $40,000.00 any one year.

5. Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia

The sponsor is inviting researchers working in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease (MND) to apply for grants-in-aid to support research. The Institute regards its role as one of providing seed-funding for research that is innovative and having a clear relationship to the causes and cures of MND, or the support of people living with MND. In recent years, grants have ranged from $15,000 to $35,000, with an average of around $25,000 for up to 1 year.

The MND Research Institute invites applications for this prestigious Research Fellowship for motor neurone disease research in Australia. The Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease. Salary for a full-time research fellow will be funded at $72,500 p.a. for up to three years.

6. Commonwealth Fund
Harkness Fellowship in Health Care Policy and Practice

The sponsor provides an opportunity for health policy researchers and practitioners from the UK, Australia and New Zealand, to spend up to twelve months in the USA conducting original research and working with leading U.S. health policy experts. Each Fellowship provides up to US$107,000. The Fund hopes to enrich health policy thinking as Harkness Fellows study how the United States approaches health policy issues, share lessons learned from their home countries, and develop an international perspective and network of contacts to facilitate policy exchange and collaboration that continues beyond the fellowship experience.

7. Children with Leukaemia

The sponsor is currently running a funding round for projects investigating the causes of childhood leukaemia with interest in the investigation of how mutations arise and their relevance to the aetiology of childhood leukaemia. Funding is usually for up to 3 years for the employment of staff and the purchase of essential consumables for projects. Part of the criteria for the award of a grant is that there is adequate infrastructure to support the proposed work.

The sponsor is inviting applications from Network participants and members of Network Contributing Organisations for a fourth round of seed funding. Topic interest for this round of funding are: Experience of social exclusion for children & youth in rural areas, Health and wellbeing implications of the internet, System integration from early childhood to adolescence, Homelessness in children. The amount of funding awarded to each collaboration will be considered on a case by case basis, up to a maximum of $40,000.

The New Arts Communities category aims to support community based arts projects in any art form. This includes both first time or previously unfunded applicants who need assistance in getting an arts project off the ground. Projects which provide opportunities for collaborations with other community organisations that are non-arts service providers are encouraged, as are arts based projects that are initiated by non-arts community organisations. Awards of up to $5,000 are available.

The sponsor encourages dedication to science, originality and excellence, by awarding outstanding international scientists of age 45 or younger (birth date must be after 1st September 1962). This year an amount of $50,000 will be presented. The research for the 2008 prize in Biophysics is: Physics of Structure Formation & Self-Assembly of Proteins & Nucleic Acids.

The sponsor has a commitment to safer sport in NSW. To help achieve this goal, the sponsor has introduced an award scheme to recognise and reward the work and dedication of all those with an interest in making sport safe. There are three categories of award: Applied Research, Educational Promotion, and Safe Sport Practice. Prizes range from gift vouchers to a $20,000 cash prize.

The Clarke Medal, established in memory of the Reverend William Branwhite Clarke, Vice-President of the Royal Society of New South Wales from 1866 to 1878, is considered for award annually for distinguished work in a natural science done in Australia and its Territories. This year's award is in the field of Botany in all its aspects, and nominations are called for the names of suitable persons who have contributed to the science of Botany.

The Edgeworth David Medal

The Edgeworth David Medal is awarded to distinguished young scientists for work done mainly in Australia or its territories; or, contributing to the advancement of Australian science (including agriculture, engineering, dentistry, medicine and veterinary science). It is named after the pioneering geologist and longstanding supporter of the Society, Sir Edgeworth David, who wrote the first comprehensive record of the geology of Australia. Applicants must; be under the age of thirty-five (35) at 1 January 2008.

The sponsor offers travel grants to support the development of early career cardiovascular researchers. Travel Grants are available to support Australian researchers travelling to present their cardiovascular research at an overseas conference. They are also available to indigenous health researchers travelling to present their research in Australia. Funding of up to $2,000 is available.

The sponsor provides support to grains industry individuals or small groups wishing to attend a conference or undertake travel that may ultimately benefit the Australian grains industry. Successful applicants will receive 75% of the approved funding up front. The remaining 25% will only be paid once all reporting requirements have been met, including the submission and approval of a Final Report (within one (1) month of the travel completion date).

18. Australian Academy of the Humanities
Special Joint Funding - Australia and Britain - Travel Grants
The sponsor will support joint projects between Australian and British scholars to the value of up to 8,000 pounds for a project which covers both humanities and social sciences disciplines or two awards of up to 4,000 pounds per project will be available each to cover travel and maintenance expenses. The award will be for one year with possible extension upon re-application. This scheme is not intended to cover major research expenses.
