Funding for research grants and fellowships is a competitive process and applications will be assessed against the stated criteria and considered on competitive merit against other applications. Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Call for Applications
On 28th November the Commonwealth Government announced the timing and guidelines of the next round of CRC applications. Applications close on

Library of Successful Research Grants

1. Australian Learning and Teaching Council
i) *Priority Projects Program
The programs offered by the sponsor are designed to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in higher education, to facilitate innovation and collaboration and to disseminate best practice. The Priority Projects Program supports programs addressing: Academic Standards, Curriculum renewal, teaching and learning spaces and Peer Review. Funding will be available in the range of $60,000-$220,000 for duration of up to 2 years.

The sponsor invites applications for the 2009 Brain Foundation Research Grants to support research projects in the neurosciences. The primary objective of the Research Grants is to support individual researchers and research teams to conduct the highest quality research in brain illnesses and neurological disorders as well as brain and spinal injuries. A subsidiary objective is to provide opportunities for early career researchers to gain initiating funding for projects with potential.

3. Australia Council for the Arts
Fellowships - Visual Arts
Fellowship grants provide extended support to craftspeople, designers, media artists and visual artists of outstanding ability to enable them to realise ambitious projects and develop their practice to new levels of achievement. Fellowships are worth $90,000 over two years.

Australia-China Special Fund for S&T Cooperation
The Australian Government in conjunction with the Government of the People's Republic of China has established the Australia-China Fund for S&T Cooperation. The Australia-China Special Fund provides support, on a competitive basis, for Australian researchers to participate in strategically focused, leading edge, international scientific research and technological collaborations with Chinese partners. Research projects must draw on complementary strengths in both countries and meet the objectives of the ISL program. This is a joint Australia-China fund. Applicants must seek funding for collaboration with a Chinese partner. Both the Australian and Chinese partners must submit an application to their respective Government. All applicants should refer to Part three of the ISL Guidelines before commencing an application. The Australian Government will contribute up to $2 million per round.

JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships

The sponsor invites applications from young researchers to conduct advanced research relevant to the main thematic focus of UNU-IAS (Institute of Advanced Studies), located in Yokohama, or UNU-ISP (Institute for Sustainability and Peace), located in Tokyo, and in co-operation with their host researchers at Japanese universities and research institutions. This fellowship is aimed at candidates who have completed their PhD in the past six years and also have professional and/or research experience.

Harold White Fellowships 2009
The sponsor offers annual fellowships to established researchers and writers. The scheme aims to promote the Library as a centre of scholarly activity and research. Research projects supported by the fellowship can be in any discipline or are in which the library has strong collections, such as Australian History, politics, art history, geography and musicology.

9. Heart Foundation
*Postdoctoral Fellowships
These Fellowships are available to medical and science graduates who have completed a MD or PhD award within the last five years and are seeking support to become established as independent researchers. Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are tenable for up to two years. They may be full or part-time. Funding is not renewable; however current fellows may apply for a second award provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

Applications for grants to support original scientific projects on the biology and cultivation of Australian plants are invited from research workers in Australia. The sponsor will consider all relevant applications, with special interest in the following categories: Conservation of Australian plant diversity, particularly where there are threats from climatic change, Plant species with potential for cultivation, enabling cultivation of Australian plants and rare and endangered plants. Funding will be in the range of $5,000-$12,000 per grant.

11. Australian Institue for Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE)
Postdoctoral Fellowships
Applications are now sought form the 2009 Postdoctoral Fellowship program. The areas in which applications are encouraged are: neutron scattering, radiopharmaceuticals, high-resolution climate records using nuclear techniques and materials engineering.

12. Australian Museum
Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship

This fellowship is to help recent PhD graduates establish a career in biodiversity research. The Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship provides the applicant with the opportunity to publish papers from their thesis and to apply for grants. The fellowship also facilitates networking and collaboration with senior research scientists at the Australian Museum and other experts in the field. Applicants should be Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents and should have been awarded their PhD in a biodiversity-related field consistent with the Australian Museum's Science Research Strategy 2007-2012

(i) Scientific Visits to China

The sponsor supports professional scientists to visit China between 1 April 2010 and 31 December 2010 to collaborate with researchers in institutes affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science, will be considered.
(ii) Scientific Visits to Europe

Australians with a Ph.D. in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science are invited to visit Europe between 1 January 2010and 31 December 2010 to collaborate with European researchers. The award covers a contribution to international airfares plus a daily living allowance to a maximum amount of $10,500.
(iii) Scientific Visits to Japan

The sponsor invites applications from professional scientists to visit Japan between 1 April 2010 and 31 December 2010 to collaborate with researchers in institutes affiliated with the JSPS. Proposals in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science will be considered. The duration of the visit must be between 14 and 40 days.
(iv) Scientific Visits to Korea

Australian scientists holding a Ph.D. in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science, will be considered for visits to Korea to conduct collaborative research. The duration of visits must be between 14 and 28 days. Visits should occur between 1 April 2010 and 31 December 2010.
(v) Scientific Visits to Taiwan

Support is provided for professional scientists to visit Taiwan between 1 April 2010 and 31 December 2010 to conduct collaborative research. Proposals in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science, will be considered. The program provides a return airfare and a daily allowance for a period between two and four weeks. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.
(vi) Scientific Visits to the USA, Canada and Mexico

Australians with a Ph.D. in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science are invited to visit the USA, Canada and Mexico between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2010 for collaborative research. Awards of up to $10,500 are available.

The Family Medical Care Education and Research (FMCER) grants are available for a 12 month period to provide new and emerging GP researchers with an opportunity to conduct research. Funding of up to $10,000 is available for research that benefits primary health care. Funding will not be provided for researcher salary.

The NHMRC Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowships provides opportunities for Australian researchers to undertake research that is both of major importance in its field and of benefit to Australian health. Fellowships provide a vehicle for training in basic research either in Australia or overseas (where appropriate), to enable Fellows to work on research projects with nominated advisers. Awards are offered to a limited number of persons of outstanding ability who wish to make research a significant component of their career.

17. The Royal Australian Chemical Institute
Cornforth Medal
The Cornforth medal is awarded annually for the most outstanding PhD thesis submitted in a branch of chemistry, chemical science or chemical technology. The medal is designed to give recognition of outstanding achievement in chemistry and to promote chemical communication. The prize will be a bronze relief medal and a suitable cash award. To be eligible for the award, the candidate must be a financial RACI member and must have had the PhD degree approved by the governing body of an Australian University within the previous 13 months dating from the close of applications. No candidate may be nominated more than once.

The Prime Ministers Awards for Science
The Australian Government awards prizes annually for outstanding scientific achievements and excellence in science teaching. These awards are the most prestigious and significant of their kind in Australia. Nominations are now invited for these awards, which are offered to Australian citizens or those who hold permanent residence status in Australia. Nominations should be made by nominators who are personally knowledgeable of the nominated achievements and who can offer expert opinions on its worth. Self nominations will not be considered.

19. The Aileen Plant Memorial Prize in Infectious Diseases Epidemiology

The Aileen Plant Memorial Prize will be awarded annually for a first author paper by an Australian researcher, published in the previous calendar year in a peer-reviewed medical journal in the area of infectious diseases epidemiology. The prize consists of AU $2000 and a certificate. The applicant must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident

20. Australian Synchrotron
International Synchrotron Access Program (ISAP)

The new International Synchrotron Access Program (ISAP) is now available. The aim of this program is to provide travel funding for Australia based researchers to access overseas synchrotron facilities for experiments that cannot be performed at the Australian Synchrotron. Proposals are being accepted for travel to all overseas synchrotron facilities.
Please note that the first cut-off for proposals is 5pm on Tuesday March 31st. Funding applications received after this date will not be considered until early June. You can submit funding applications even if your beamtime has not yet been approved by the overseas facility.
