Programs that Enhance Learning - Nominations due 10 July 2009
Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning recognise learning and teaching support programs and services that make an outstanding contribution to the quality of student learning and the quality of the student experience. The programs and services that receive these Awards must have demonstrated their effectiveness through rigorous evaluation and will set benchmarks for similar activities in other institutions.
The Learning and Teaching Unit will be holding a workshop for those interested in pursuing this opportunity on the 16th June from 12.30-2pm. This workshop will be held in Room 416, level 4, Matthews building @UNSW.

1.     NSW Office for Science and Medical Research
China-NSW Collaborative Research Program  
The NSW Government is inviting grant applications from joint NSW and Chinese research teams. The primary purpose of the Program is to support the best NSW teams or institutions working collaboratively with Chinese partners in research and technology. The pilot round of the Program will focus on projects relating to Traditional Chinese Medicine and Proteomics.

2.     The Ramaciotti Foundation
Research Grant - Expressions of Interest   
i) Establishment Grants
These start up grants are intended to provide short term research support for a young investigator who is taking or has taken a new position in another institution (as opposed to a promotion with their current organisation). The applicant must have a maximum of five years cumulative post-doctoral experience as at 1 January 2010. The Grant can be used for any combination of personnel, equipment (excluding infrastructure), consumables or other expenses, but not for travel. The maximum total amount is $50,000.

ii) Equipment Grants
Applications may be made for a contribution for or towards the acquisition of a major item of equipment. Equipment may be used on various projects by a number of investigators within a department or institution. A commitment from the Foundation to contribute will be subject to the balance of the full cost being raised by the applicant, including the matching grant from the host institution.

3.     Retina Australia
Research Grants
The sponsor invites applications for funding of high quality scientific/medical research relevant to causes, treatments, prevention and cure of retinitis pigmentosa and other inherited and age-related retinal dystrophies. Funding of up to $40,000 is available.

4.     Brain Foundation
*Research Grants 
The sponsor invites applications for the 2009 Brain Foundation Research Grants to support research projects in the neurosciences. The primary objective of the Research Grants is to support individual researchers and research teams to conduct the highest quality research in brain illnesses and neurological disorders as well as brain and spinal injuries. A subsidiary objective is to provide opportunities for early career researchers to gain initiating funding for projects with potential.

Project Grants
The Ian Potter Foundation is one of Australia 's leading private philanthropic organisations. The Foundation has a track record of funding projects led by far sighted individuals and organisations that improve the Australian community's ability to respond creatively to social, environmental, science and health issues, and that develop our capacity as a nation through the arts and education.

7.     Go8 Australia-Germany joint Research Co-Operation Scheme.
General Call for Research Collaborations

The scheme is a joint initiative of the Group of Eight (Go8) universities and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funding of $1.5 million initially for three years from 2009-2011 inclusive. The scheme aims to foster research collaborations of the highest quality between Australian researchers from Go8 universities and German researchers. Exchange participants must either be employed as academic staff members in a teaching and research or research only role at a Go8 university, or a PhD student involved in the research project submitted by an eligible staff member. The scheme will support exchanges for Australian researchers to spend time at partner institutions in Germany and for collaborating German researchers to spend time at Go8 universities.

8.     Australian Institue for Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE)*
Postdoctoral Fellowships
The sponsor provides support for research funding for ophthalmologists, trainee ophthalmologists or for work being done in University Departments of Ophthalmology. The sponsor will consider funding individual grants during 2010 for up to $50,000 for a period of one year.

The Scheme supports the commercial development of a product, process, procedure or service that if applied, would result in improved health care, disease prevention or provide health cost savings. 
Applications must demonstrate a basic understanding of the process and steps required to move from research to outcomes that can be commercialised, including: the process and steps to a market, the nature of the market; the milestones and risks of the venture; and an understanding of possible means of handling intellectual property connected with the project.

11. The Commonwealth Fund
Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy & Practice  2010-2011

The Harkness Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for mid-career professionals—academic researchers, government policymakers, clinicians, managers, and journalists—from Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, to spend up to 12 months in the United States conducting a policy-oriented research study, working with leading U.S. health policy experts, and gaining an in-depth knowledge of the U.S., Australian, Canadian, Dutch, German, New Zealand, and U.K. health care systems. Each fellowship will provide up to US$107,000 in support.

12. The Royal Australasian College of Physicians

The Fellowships and scholarships provided by the Research and Education Foundation are available only to Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and its Faculties and Chapters. The majority of awards are designed for Fellows or Advanced Trainees at an early stage of their careers and strong preference will be given to these applicants. Several awards are, however, available to more established researchers.

13. Diabetes Australia Research Trust*
Millennium Diabetes Research Grant

The Grants will be made available for two types of research: (1) type 1 diabetes including modulation of the immune system, beta cell replacement / islet transplantation, genetic engineering / gene therapy, hypoglycemia, and complications (retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy) and (2) type 2 diabetes including insulin secretion and action, insulin resistance, and complications. These grants will be awarded for a two year period, and will not normally exceed $150,000.

The sponsor provides funding for seeding grants of up to $15,000 for research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract. Seeding Grants are awarded to assist with the development of new research ideas, to form solid preliminary data to the point where they can be submitted to the NHMRC (or other) funding body for full funding. The application should be for a genuinely new research idea.

The sponsor offers support for organizations focusing on increasing access to health care - particularly for the disadvantaged and underserved - in communities where the sponsor's employees live and work. The sponsor funds initiatives that improve the access, quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare. The sponsor also works to increase the availability, commitment and skills of healthcare providers. Preference is given to proposals that expand or improve access to healthcare with a strong plan for sustaining the services or program beyond the term the grant.

The Alcohol and Health Medical Research Grants Scheme is funded by Lion Nathan Limited, with the aim of providing financial support for independent research into the potential effects of alcohol consumption. Applications for grants are open to eligible early career researchers. Funding of up to $35,000 is available.

19. National Breast Cancer Foundation
i)*NBCF Early Career Fellowship

The aim of this award is to support the development of early career researchers with outstanding potential for a career in breast cancer research. Researchers with a doctorate degree and/or a professional qualification from an accredited institution who have between three and eight years of research or professional experience are encouraged to apply. Funding of up to $600,000 over 4 years is available. Application forms are currently under review and will be available on the website soon.

ii) *National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Program
NBCF believes in the need to be responsive to breast cancer research progress and opportunities nationally and internationally and maximise the use of limited resources. The National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals to apply for funding to undertake applied research programs in relation to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The broad areas of research that have been identified are: Test development and validation issues, Issues relating to contexts of test use and Issues of test impact. It also encourages innovative research resulting in new forms of scholarly communication, including those targeted to general audiences.

22. NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing
Research Project 
The NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing (OLGR) is seeking proposals to undertake a research project to determine the most appropriate minimum distance between ATMs and gaming areas in venues with gaming machines in order to minimise harms associated with problem gambling. The available budget for this research project is a maximum of $195,000 (GST exclusive).

23. The Spencer Foundation

As part of a new institutional initiative, the Spencer Foundation will make several awards of up to US$40,000 for research projects in Philosophy as it relates to educational policy and practice. Funding of up to $22,000 per grant is available

The awards reward good practice in the prevention or reduction of violence and other types of crimes in Australia, to encourage public initiatives and to assist governments in identifying and developing practical projects that will reduce violence and other types of crime in the community. Projects may address specific groups such as rural and remote communities, women, children, youth or the family, or specific problems such as alcohol-related violence. An award may also be available for initiatives of great merit or for outstanding projects that have recently ceased operation.

30. Presidents Award

The award recognises distinguished contributions to psychology in Australia by psychologists at later career stage. The contribution must have made a difference to psychology and the Australian community as a whole. The nominee’s work must meet the mission statement for the sponsor: namely, “to represent, promote and advance psychology and psychologists within the context of improving community well-being and scientific knowledge”. The vaule of the award is $3,000.
